Hi just listen to this episode ( love the podcast by the way), I’ve always though that the difference between the two was that a communist was more certain of what a post capitalism society would look like where a socialist was uncertain of what it would look like but knows that the capitalist society needs to end.

    • I think it seems that way a lot, of course Marx thought it pure utopianism to speculate on either (even though he himself writes about what communism would look like here and there). One way I sometimes like to think about is that communism is the utopic vision of a classless society freed from capitalism, racism, sexism, etc. and is post scarcity (though that part is normally implied and may not be required). Socialism is the post-capitalist society striving towards that utopian vision of communism. I think part of the reason that socialism can be a bit nebulous is that it’s really hard to predict when and why capitalism will be overthrown and that will be a large contributor to what society looks like.
